Salvatore Ingrassia moved to Rockford with his family in 1902. Salvatore opened the cities second Italian-American grocery store on South Main Street. This was the humble beginning of the Ingrassia families retail history.
In 1922, two of Salvatore's sons, Nunzio and Joe founded Ingrassia Brothers Furniture and Hardware. Several years later Nunzio and Joe separated the business and Nunzio relocated Ingrassia Furniture to 1032 South Main Street (Lucky for us, as eventually the hardware building burned down). In 1962, Nunzio pioneered East State Street by building the second free standing home for Ingrassia Furniture.
Nunzio's son John and daughter Carm Clark purchased the business in 1968. Later John would buy the Clark's share and become sole owner. John's son Michael worked in the business from 1975 until his death in 1982. Between 1982 and 1996 John Jr. was part of the business. John's daughter Rose and her husband Brian Belida joined the business in 1995 and became the owners in 1998. After five years of planning they built and opened the third and most exciting Ingrassia Furniture in the summer of 1999.
